Together for more sustainable urban ecosystems

Together for more sustainable urban ecosystems
The Society for Urban Ecology
has five goals…
1. Develop an understanding of the structure and function of urban ecosystems;
2. Advance a balanced interaction between humans and their environments in
cities and towns;
3. Foster and
develop knowledge and implementation of urban ecology;
4. Strengthen
contacts and enrich the dialogue
between researchers, practitioners and teachers;
5. Make the collective expertise of urban
ecologists available.
Why Urban Ecology?
The majority of people worldwide live in
cities and their numbers continue to increase. Cities offer an attractive living environment for the majority of people, but
more knowledge is needed about the dynamics of urban ecosystems and landscapes.
With increased urbanization worldwide, an
urban perspective is increasingly needed to
understand human-nature interactions for
better science, design, planning, and management of cities and regions.
Landscape ecology also as a complex crosssectional discipline integrated urban ecology
early on, first as an special section. In 2009
it established itself for the first time independently and self confidently in a worldwide Society of Urban Ecology (SURE).
